The Dont's Of The Process
What Not To Do. What Not To Say.
15 Things To Never, Ever Say In An Interview
By Malia Joy Wofford
1." My Old Boss & I Didn't Get Along"
Your boss may have really been a difficult person to deal, but the person you are interviewing with wasn't there to see that action. So, they may be thinking you were probably the problem. If there is nothing you can say about your former or current boss, that is positive.
2. "Um...So...Yeah"
This can seem a little bit unprofessional, but it is so easy to do. If you are running out of things to say, tie it back into the original question. Or, you can ask did that fully answer questions?
3. "Sorry That I Was Late"
Unless you have a really good excuse, like you got a flat tire on the way, being late is never good. There are always too many other candidates to choose from, that being late is an easy way to no longer be considered as a candidate. Show up early, but not too early so that the interviewer feels rushed. Showing up about 10 minutes early is perfect.
4. "What Do You Do In This Company?"
Perhaps not the best question to ask. If you want to know that, do a little research on them. Check out their social media pages and company profile to better understand who you will be interviewing with.
5. "Oh Gosh, My Last Company"
It is quite common for an interviewer to want to know why you left your previous company. Never speak negatively about a company. Instead, mention the good things you learned and one general reason you decided to move on.
6. "I'm So Nervous"
Definitely, never say that. Try your best not to be overcome with fear. Hiring personnel are looking for secure and confident people. They will be concerned that if you are intimidated by an interview, that you will be intimidated by the demands of the job.
7. "Working Too Hard Is My Weakness"
You never know when an interviewer will ask you, "What is your weakness?" It is an over used response in interviews to say, "Working too hard". Think about various ways you have struggled in your job. For example, maybe you have struggled with delegating work to your team. You've always been afraid that maybe they won't do it as well as you envision. So, you just do it all yourself. Be specific. However, explain how you try to overcome that trait, by giving over some our work little by little till you were more comfortable releasing control.
8. "I Love To Think Out Of The Box"
This is a "buzz phrase" meaning it is used often in the world of interviewing. Thinking out of the box, simply means you have creative ways of doing certain things. Instead of saying that, share an example or two of how you used your creative abilities to solve a problem, or generate new sales.
9. "I'll Do Whatever"
This can either sound desperate or like you're not a person who will take initiative. It is good to be willing to do whatever your boss asks us of you. However, it is better to present yourself as one who will look for ways to contribute, without always being asked or told. So, what types of strategies can you come up with before the interview to show various ways you can contribute?
10. "How Much Time Off Do I Get?"
This question should NOT ever come up during the interview process. Wait till you are offered the position. The interview process is to show the employer how much you can give to the company. This is what they will be looking for. Questions like this, make you sound like your looking more to gain than to give.
11. "I'm Looking to Start My Own Company"
Employers will most likely NOT hire you, if you reveal this piece of information. In fact, keep the sharing of your aspirations more towards your plans on contributing to the company. When an employer knows you are not fully invested, they will not want to invest in you.
12. " I Don't Have Any Questions"
Please, have a few good questions to ask. Here are some examples: "Can you tell me about the team I might be working with?", "Which other departments work most closely with this one? ", "What is the company and team culture like?". Be a little creative and thoughtful about your questions before going into an interview. If you don't have any questions, when asked an interviewer may wonder if you were actually really engaged in the interview. They may wonder if you have an actual interest in the company, or just want to collect a paycheck.
13. "I Can Give You My References"
Even though your references have given you permission to use them, don't over use them. Reframe from offering up your references, let the interviewer ask for them. Let your interview be based on all the value that you can give. Entice them with who you are as a person. Sometimes, if you are quick to offer your references it may seem like you're trying to hard to prove yourself and you need the backing of others to land the job.
14. "Just Checking In Again"
It is good to follow up, but don't do it too soon and frequently. Wait about a week. Follow up through one method, like E-mail, Phone or Skype. If you try all the methods, you might come off too desperate and most of the time that will not work in your favor.
15. "When Do You Promote Employees?"
This question can make you sound a little aggressive, even if you are not intending to do so. A better question might be, " What are the character traits of those you choose to promote?"
