目前，美国约有 2300多所社区大学。这些学校的学费在$6000-$8000。与中国的专科制度不同，社区大学主要的课程与美国四年制大学的前两年课程基本相同，而有很多社区大学的毕业生能够直接申请到Top20名校的三年级入学，学分照算，所以美国会有很多本土学生会放弃直接进入四年制大学而先进入社区大学就读两年时间。另一部分毕业生以他们学以致用的知识和技能直接进入工作岗位。
