This is Mulan. The classic story of a Chinese peasant girl who disguises herself as a man so that she can take her ailing father’s place as a soldier in the emperor’s war against the Huns. After years of successfully concealing her true identity, her secret is ultimately revealed and Mulan is worshipped for her courage and loyalty. This legendary story finds even more relevance among audiences today with its message of bravery, leadership and the importance of family.
This holiday season, for the first time ever, the timeless Chinese folk tale of Mulan, comes to the stage courtesy of Red Poppy — China’s first, all-female, percussion group. Red Poppy artfully integrates traditional kung fu performance with the distinctive and incomparable Chinese drumming technique. Their synchronistic drumming style provides a rich, visual backdrop for this classic tale that has been brilliantly reinterpreted for American audiences.
